How To Properly Get Your Documents Notarized
The Free Notary, Harlem offers free notarizations services to residents of ZIP Code 10029 and 10035.
Before you set out to see me or any notary for that matter, please consider the following:
In order for me to notarize a document, the person whose signature I will be notarizing must be present, in front of me, with proper signature identification.
Proper signature-identification must bear the person's picture and must be state or government issued: Dept. of Motor Vehicle I.D., Permit, Driver's License, Passport, etc.
The document to be notarized must be completely filled out. Any intentionally blank spaces must be filled in with XXXXX.
If you make an error or a typo and need to change the information or scratch-it-out, be sure to do so before the document is notarized.
Never use whiteout!
All scratch-outs and any all changes must be made byputting a straight line through the text being scratched-out, keeping the text you are scratching-out as legible as possible.
Any scratch-outs or corrections must be initialed by the person making the changes and by the notary public, prior to the notarization and never after. Altering a document after it has been notarized may be considered forging an official document, and may subject you to criminal charges.
Where the document being notarized is a statement, said statement made by the person signing the document may be notarized.
Finally, and most important:
Never sign the document before you get to me, your notary.

The sole purpose of a notary public is to ensure that you are who you say you are, and that you are the person who is signing the document in front of the notary.
WARNING: Expecting a notary public to notarize a document that has been signed beforehand, by you or someone else, is a serious crime and is grounds for criminal prosecution.
